Thiol modified purines and pyrimidines (spreader-bar) co-adsorbed with 1 dodecanethiols (matrix) onto a gold surface form self-assembled nanostructured monolayers showing recognition properties towards different purines and pyrimidines, depending on the type of the spreader-bar used.
