Abstract (German)

Ziel der Studie war es, anhand von MRT-Sequenzen eine Aussage über das menschliche Zungenvolumen und dessen Korrelation zum BMI zu treffen, sowie geschlechterspezifische Unterschiede aufzuzeigen. Das Patientenkollektiv umfasste 40 Probanden, davon 20 weiblilche und 20 männliche. Das Zungenvolumen wurde durch Volumenbestimmung des M. genioglossus, sowie mit ihm verflochtenen Binnenmuskulatur betsimmt.
Ergebnisse: Die Nullhypothese "Das menschliche Zungenvolumen stellt eine vom BMI unabhängige Größe dar" konnte nicht widerlegt werden (p=0,115); die männlichen Probanden hatten signifikant größere Zungen als die weiblichen;

Translation of the abstract (English)

Aim of the study was to estimate human tongue volume from magnetic resonance imaging and show interindividual differences of the tongue volume. Furthermore it was examined, if BMI correlates to tongue volume. 40 patients (20 male, 20 female) were enrolled in this study. The tongue volume was determined by M. genioglossus.
Results: Although there was found no significant correlation between tongue volume and BMI (p=0,115)interindividual differences between both genders could be shown. Male patients had significant larger tongue volumes than the female ones.
