Diethylstilbestrol (4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha -beta -diethyl-stilbene) has substantial fungistatic and bacteriostatic properties in addn. to its estrogenic activity. However, by shifting the phenolic OH groups to the meta position as in 3,3'-dihydroxy-alpha beta -diethylstilbene, the hormonal effect is largely lost, while the antimycotic and antibacterial properties are fully retained. Owing to its negligible hormonal side effects, 3,3'-dihydroxy-alpha ,beta -diethylstilbene thus is highly suitable for antimycotic therapy. 2,2'-Dihydroxy-alpha ,beta -diethylstilbene had neither hormonal nor antimycotic and antibacterial activity. 50 references.
