Abstract

Treatment of p-MeC6H4CHO with 33% MeNH2 gave 88% p-MeOC6H4CH:NMe (I). Redn. of I in PhMe with activated Al (prepd. from EtOH, Al foil, and HgCl2 heated at 80 Deg) and treatment with HCl-Et2O gave 22.8% p-MeOC6H4CH2NHMe.HCl (II), 38.3% meso-p-MeOC6-H4CH(NHMe)CH(NHMe)C6H4OMe-p (meso-III).2HCl, 16.7% (+-)-III.2HCl, 4.6% (+-)-IV. HCl, and 3.3% meso-IV. Refluxing meso-III.2HCl or (+-)-III.2HCl with 48% HBr 2 hr at 140 Deg gave 94.3% meso-p-HOC6H4CH(NHMe)CH(NHMe)C6-H4OH-p (meso-V), or 76.9% (+-)-V, resp.
