The reaction of benzylidenebutylamine with iso-PrMgI gave alpha -phenyl-alpha -butylamino-beta -methylpropane and small amts. of benzylbutylamine. In the presence of MnCl2, meso- and dl-N,N'-dibutyl-alpha ,alpha -diphenylethylenediamine were formed as further by-products. The yield of dimeric by-product was strongly dependent on the type of halogen in the Grignard compd. Thus, in the presence of 2.5 mole-% MnCl2, the total yield of dimeric product increased according to the sequence I < Br < Cl. The ratio of dl- to meso-form increased in the same sequence from 1.1 to 1.4 to 8.3.
