Abstract (German)

Im Zeitraum vom 28.11.1996 bis zum 07.12.2005 wurden an der Klinik und Poliklinik der Inneren Medizin I des Universitätsklinikums Regensburg 3770 Endoskopien bei 1841 Patienten mit einem Alter von mindestens 75 Jahren durchgeführt. Das Durchschnittsalter der Patienten betrug 79 Jahre. Die häufigste Untersuchung stellte die Gastroskopie (n = 2270; 60,2%) dar, gefolgt von der ERCP (n = 765; 20,3%) und der Koloskopie (n = 735; 19,5%). Ausgewertet wurden u.a. Indikationsstellung, Sedierung, Befunde, Komplikationen und therapeutische Maßnahmen.
Zusammenfassend ist festzuhalten, dass die gastrointestinale Endoskopie bei Patienten ab dem 75. Lebensjahr sicher und nahezu komplikationsfrei durchzuführen und auf Grund der hohen Befunddichte klinisch relevant ist. Die gastrointestinale Endoskopie wird von den Patienten sehr gut toleriert. Die Entscheidung über die Durchführung einer gastrointestinalen Endoskopie sollte daher individuell und nicht allein auf Grund des Alters der Patienten erfolgen.

Translation of the abstract (English)

The study involved 3770 gastrointestinal endoscopy in 1841 elderly patients aged 75 years and more between 1996 and 2005 (mean age 79 years).
2270 (60.2%) esophagogastroduodenoscopy, 765 (20.3%) endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and 735 (19.5%) colonoscopy were evaluated retrospectively, with focus on indication, use of sedation, diagnosis, complication and endoscopic therapy.
The study shows that gastrointestinal endoscopy is safe and a well tolerated procedure with high diagnostic yield. The decision on performing gastrointestinal endoscopy should be made individually and not based on age alone.
