The modular synthesis of pyrimidine oligohydrazides and their peptide binding ability are reported. Ethylene glycol substituents ensure water solubility of the compounds. The pattern of hydrogen bond donors and hydrogen bond acceptors resembles the functionalities of a peptide backbone, and intramolecular hydrogen bonds restrict conformational mobility.
