The toxicological and environment matters caused by the massive use of chlorinated solvents as well as ethers derivated from ethylene glycol in degreasing process and cleaning formulations involved a regulation reinforcement. Therefore, the industry was obliged to decrease their use and to search for new compounds. The use of ethers derivated from propylene glycol (also called Dowanols P-series), much more environment-friendly, is apparently a very efficient solution. That is why they are common in everyday life products. Nevertheless, our knowledge about their physico-chemical properties still remains incomplete. The main aim of this thesis is to study the properties and the behavior of Dowanols. Indeed they are more than simple solvents insofar as they exhibit additional properties.
In the introduction part an overview concerning the Dowanols presents the general interests, structures, usual properties and applications. In a first part the properties of Dowanols in aqueous mixtures are studied. The binary phase diagrams Dowanol/water versus temperature are precisely determined by automated turbidity measurements. The salt effects on the phase transition observed in these binary phase diagrams are also assessed. Information about the system itself and about general considerations concerning salt specificity (Hofmeister series) are then highlighted. The ability of certain Dowanols to solubilize hydrophobic compounds in water is also investigated. By comparing the Dowanol solubilization curves to the one of usual hydrotropes and co-solvents a consistent discussion is done on the hydrotrope/co-solvent solubilization processes. The extent of the hydrophobic part in hydrotrope or co-solvent molecules is clearly proved to influence strongly the aqueous solubilization.
In a second part the Dowanol behavior as co-surfactant was investigated. At first this is done in surfactant dilute systems by studying the critical micellar concentration (CMC) decrease of sodium dodecyl sulfate through co-surfactant addition, i.e. some Dowanols, n-alcohols and ethyleneglycol monoalkylethers. This method permits to evaluate the co-surfactant behavior of each studied compounds and thus to classify them. The topology of the corresponding water/SDS/co-surfactant ternary phase diagrams is confronted to these results. Then the design of temperature sensitive anionic microemulsion is elaborated by addition of dodecane as oil phase to the latter ternary system and by using Dowanols as co-surfactant. Such microemulsions, used as reaction media or in extraction processes, present facilitated separation and purification steps.
Finally enzymatic reactions are investigated in buffers and microemulsions. Salt effects on buffers and on enzymatic activities are discussed. Direct correlations between enzymatic activity and microemulsion microstructures are noted and explained.

Die massive Verwendung von Chlorinlösungsmitteln als auch von Etherderivaten von Ethyleneglykol in Entfettungsverfahren und Waschmittelprodukte hat zu toxikologischen und Umweltsprobleme geführt. Deshalb wurde die Industrie gezwungen, ihre Verwendung zu reduzieren und nach neuen Komponenten zu suchen. Ein effiziente Lösung dafür ist die Verwendung von Etherderivaten von Propyleneglykol (auch Dowanol genannt), die viel umweltfreundlicher sind. Deshalb sind sie heute in vielen Produkten des Alltagslebens zu finden. Unsere Kenntnisse über ihre physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften bleibt aber unvollständig. Das Hauptziel dieser Doktorarbeit war, die Eigenschaften und das Verhalten von Dowanolen zu studieren. Übrigens sind sie mehr als einfache Lösungsmitteln, insofern als sie viele andere Eigenschaften besitzen.
Die Einführung betrifft sich um die allgemeine Eigenschaften der Dowanolen, ihre Strukturen und mögliche Anwendungen. Im ersten Teil wurde das Verhalten von Dowanolen in wässrigen Lösungen studiert. Das binäre Phasendiagram Dowanol/Wasser gegen Temperatur wurden durch Trübungspunktsmessungen genau bestimmt. Auch studiert wurden den Effekt von Salzen über den Trübungspunkt dieser Lösungen. Die Fähigkeit gewisser Dowanolen für die Solubilisierung hydrophobischer Komponenten in Wasser wurde untersucht. Es wurde bewiesen, dass die Grösse des hydrophobischen Teils in hydrotropischen and co-solventen Molekülen die wässrige Solubilisierung stark beeinflüsst.
Im zweiten Teil wurde das Vehalten der Dowanolen als Co-tenside untersucht. Es wurde zuerst in verdünnten Tensidlösungen studiert, indem das Sinken der kritischen mizellaren Konzentration von natrium dodecyl sulfate durch zugabe von Co-tenside untersucht wurde, d.h. Dowanolen, n-Alokolen und Ethyleneglykolmonoalkyletheren. Durch diese Methode kann man das Verhalten als Co-tenside jedes studierten Komponenten evaluieren und dadurch sie einordnen. Danach wurden temperatursensitive anionische Microemulsionen durch die Verwendung von Dowanolen als Co-tenside entwickelt. Solche Microemulsionen ermöglichen vereinfachte Abtrennungs- und Reinigungsverfahren.
Endlich wurden enzymatischen Reaktionen in Pufferlösungen und Microemulsionen untersucht. Direkte Verbindungen zwischen enzymatischer Aktivität und Microstrukturen von Microemulsionen wurden bemerkt und erklärt.
