Abstract (English)

The aim of this thesis was to study the formation and stabilization of vesicles in mixed surfactant systems. Catanionic surfactant mixtures were chosen, because they were shown to form vesicle spontaneously under certain conditions and exhibit an enhanced sensitivity to outside parameters, such as temperature or the presence of salts. Using various experimental techniques, and employing a general concept of �matching water affinities�, a detailed study of ion specificity in catanionic systems is described.

Vesicles are good models for biological membranes and encapsulation systems. They are also widely used for technical applications. To optimize their applications it is important to have a general understanding of the interplay of interactions between the surfactants and of the factors influencing the phase diagram of a mixed system. The effect of alcohol and salt on the morphological transitions is described, and the potential of using such systems for cosmetical and pharmaceutical purposes was explored by determining their cytotoxicity.

Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war das Studium der Entstehung und Stabilisierung von Vesikeln in Systemen gemischter Tenside. Es wurden dafür katanionische Tensidgemische gewählt, da diese unter gewissen Voraussetzungen spontan Vesikeln bilden und sehr empfindlich gegen externe Einflüsse, wie z. B. Temperatur oder Salze sind. Durch den Einsatz verschiedener Techniken und der Zugrundelegung des allgemeinen Prinzips der �matching water affinities�, wurde eine ausführliche Studie der Ionenspezifität in katanionischen Systemen durchgeführt.

Vesikeln sind gute Modelle für biologische Membranen und Kapselsysteme. Sie finden auch technische Anwendung; zu deren Optimierung ist es wichtig, ein grundlegendes Verständnis für das Zusammenspiel der Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Tensiden und den phasendiagrammbeeinflussenden Faktoren eines Gemisches zu entwickeln. Der Einfluss von Alkohol und Salzen auf die morphologischen Übergänge wird beschrieben und das Potential dieser Systeme für kosmetische und pharmazeutische Anwendungen durch die Bestimmung der Toxizität wurde untersucht.
