Die vorliegende Studie untersuchte erstmalig anhand einer fMRT-Untersuchung die neuronalen Korrelate der Emotionsattribution nach neutralen und unmoralischen Intentionen im Vergleich an 10- bis 12-jährigen Kindern. Dazu bekamen die Probanden kurze Bildergeschichten mit spielenden Kindern gezeigt und wählten am Ende jeder Sequenz, ob der Protagonist nach Erfüllung bzw. Nichterfüllung seiner neutralen bzw. unmoralischen Intention fröhlich oder traurig sei.
Auf Verhaltensebene zeigte sich erwartungsgemäß, dass die Probanden nach Nichterfüllung einer Intention negative Emotionen attribuieren, nach Erfüllung einer neutralen Intention positive. Für die unmoralische erfüllte Bedingung schrieben knapp zwei Drittel dem Protagonisten positive Emotionen zu, was durch eine mehrheitlich zielorientierte Sichtweise der Probanden, jedoch beeinflusst durch den moralischen Gehalt der Stimuli, erklärt werden könnte. Validiert wurde diese Beobachtung durch ein Emotionsrating anhand einer Auswahl der Bildergeschichten.
Als neuronales Korrelat der Emotionsattribution allgemein wurde der superiore temporale Gyrus identifiziert, welcher als Korrelat von Handlungsmonitoring und Zielzuschreibung diskutiert wird. Teile des ventrolateralen präfrontalen Kortex (inferiorer und superiorer frontaler Gyrus) zeigten Mehraktivierungen nach moralisch relevanten Stimuli, was im Zusammenhang mit Emotionsregulation und Informationsintegration erklärt wurde. In der unmoralischen erfüllten Bedingung wurden Aktivierungen im mittleren frontalen Gyrus und im cingulären/medialen frontalen Gyrus beobachtet. Als Teile des dorsalen medialen präfrontalen Kortex wurden diese mit der Verarbeitung von Normüberschreitungen und Konfliktlösungsprozessen assoziiert. Im Vergleich der unerfüllten unmoralischen Bedingung mit der unerfüllten neutralen Bedingung zeigten sich Mehraktivierungen im Precuneus, welche als Korrelat des Perspektivenwechsels und des Bewusstsein der eigenen Person gedeutet wurden. Allein in der neutralen erfüllten Bedingung wurden Aktivierungen im anterioren Cingulum beobachtet und als Korrelat der automatischen Zuschreibung von Basis-Emotionen und im Zusammenhang mit positiven Emotionen allgemein interpretiert.
Weitere Studien sind notwendig, um die gefundenen Ergebnisse zu überprüfen und weiter zu spezifizieren, so z. B. im Vergleich verschiedener Altersgruppen oder auch an Probanden mit Beeinträchtigung der ToM-Funktionen. Durch die vorliegende Arbeit wurde jedoch der Grundstein gelegt, die neuronalen Netzwerke der Emotionsattribution bei Kindern zu identifizieren.

Translation of the abstract (English)

By using fMRT the present study was the first that investigated the neural correlates of
inferring emotions associated with neutral and immoral intentions in 10 to 12 year old children. The children saw short cartoons depicting three playing children. Two different conditions were realized: in the neutral condition the protagonist had a neutral intention (e.g. rolling the ball to another child) in the immoral condition the protagonist had an immoral intention (e.g. hurt another child with the ball). The outcome of the story matched or mismatched with the protagonist’s intention. The task of the child was to indicate the protagonist’s emotion in respect to his or her intention and the outcome of the story.
As expected, the behavioural data showed the attribution of negative emotions after a mismatch outcome of an intention and positive emotions after a match outcome of a neutral intention. After an immoral intention with match outcome two thirds attributed positive emotions, what we explained with the focus on the successful outcome, but influenced by the moral value.
The fMRT data showed activity of the superior temporal gyrus associated with emotion attribution in general, which might be related to the monitoring of actions and the attribution of goals. Parts of the ventrolateral PFC (inferior and superior frontal gyrus) showed increased activity after immoral intentions, which might be correlated with the regulation of emotion and the integration of information. The immoral intention with match outcome showed increased activity in the middle frontal gryus and the cingulate/medial frontal gyrus, discussed as parts of the dorsal mPFC and correlates of transgression of behavioural norms and solution of conflicts. The comparison of the immoral and the neutral intentions with mismatch outcome showed increased activity in the precuneus, which might be associated with the change of perspective and the consciousness of self. The neutral intention with match outcome alone showed increased activity in the anterior cingulum, discussed as correlated with the automatic attribution of positive emotions and positive emotionos in general.
This present study was a fist step towards the identification of the neural networks of emotion attribution in children. Further investigations would be necessary to prove and specify the present findings, e.g. in comparison of different age groups or in persons with deficits in ToM-functions.
