The work attempts to revive the tradition of the material philosophy of history under the conditions of the present in a critical way. Formally following the theory of Oswald Spengler, the methodological suggestions of the historian of science Thomas Kuhn are taken up and own nominalistic methodological premises are worked out. Based on this, a typological process model is developed. In particular, to contrast atypical and typical instantiations of the model against each other, examples from the field of art history are discussed in detail. This is followed by a critical examination of possible objections to such a theory, with particular emphasis on the positions of Jacob Burckhardt and Karl Popper. Finally, an attempt is made to use the developed approach for a interpretation of the contemporary history.
