Graphene is a two-dimensional material with numerous applications, amongst others in the field of spintronics. For many applications it is desirable to enhance the very weak spin-orbit coupling in graphene by embedding it into graphene-based van-der-Waals heterostructures with other materials. In such structures the twist angle between the layers can influence both the magnitude and flavour of the spin-orbit coupling.
Using density funtional theory, we calculate band structures of differently twisted heterostructure supercells and extract the three most important spin-orbit coupling parameters: Rashba, Kane-Mele and valley-Zeeman. In the calculations various materials with strong spin-orbit coupling are used in order to induce spin-orbit coupling in graphene: The transition-metal dichalcogenides MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, WSe2 and NbSe2 as well as the three-dimensional topological insulators Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3. As a result we see the special twist-angle dependencies of the spin-orbit coupling in the different material combinations. We additionally observe the emergence of unconventional radial in-plane Rashba spin textures which are brought about by the breaking of the mirror symmetries.
