Following the production of meso-N,N'-dibutyl-alpha ,alpha '-bis(3-chloro-4-methoxyphenyl)ethylenediamine (I) [34608-86-1] and dl-N,N'-dibutyl-alpha ,alpha '-bis(3-chloro-4-methoxyphenyl)ethylenediamine (II) [27958-22-1] by the redn. of 3-chloro-4-methoxybenzylidenebutylamine with activated Al in alc., the compds. were tested for antimicrobial and antitumor activity. II inhibited 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (III) [57-97-6] mammary tumor induction in rats. I and II displayed no activity against bacteria and fungi, and were ineffective against the Yoshida sarcoma, the sarcoma 180, or the solid Ehrlich carcinoma.
