BACKGROUND: ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters cause various diseases and regulate many physiologic processes, such as lipid homeostasis, iron transport, and immune mechanisms. Several ABC transporters are involved in bile acid, phospholipid, and sterol transport, and their expression is itself controlled by lipids.
