Spontaneous magnetic flux induced by ferromagnetic pi-junctions

Abstract (English)

In this thesis the magnetic properties of superconducting loops with an integrated ferromagnetic Josephson junction are investigated. For certain values of the exchange field and layer thickness of the ferromagnet, Josephson junctions with an intrinsic phase difference of pi, so called pi-junction, can be realized. The superconducting loops are made of Niobium, the ferromagnetic coupling layer consist of the diluted ferromagnet PdNi. The loops are fabricated by three step shadow evaporation using a high temperature stable shadow mask made of Polyethersulfone and Ge. Each individual loop is placed on top of the active area of a micro-Hall sensor made of a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure which allows the detection of the magnetic moment arising from the circulating currents in the loop. By varying the applied magnetic field, the phase difference across the weak link can be controlled. The magnetic response of the loops when sweeping the applied field provides evidence for the pi-state of the ferromagnetic junctions. The main result of this work is the detection of the magnetic moment resulting from a spontaneous supercurrent which arises in the pi-loop when cooling down the loop in zero field. This observation can be explained by the half-integer flux quantization applicable for pi-loops. In addition, ferromagnetic Josephson junctions with a layer thickness close to the 0-pi crossover were investigated. At the 0-pi crossover point the critical current of the junctions is especially low and the periodicity of the corresponding current-phase-relation is expected to switch from 2pi to pi. Although the measurements on these loops showed some interesting effects, a conclusive interpretation of the results on this special type of Josephson junctions could not be given within the framework of this thesis.

Diese Doktorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Untersuchung der magnetischen Eigenschaften von supraleitenden Ringen mit integriertem ferromagnetischem Josephson Kontakt. Für bestimmte Werte des Austauschfeldes und der Schichtdicke des Ferromagneten besitzen die Josephson Kontakte eine intrinsischer Phasenverschiebung von pi (pi-Kontakte). Die supraleitenden Ringe bestehen aus Niob, die ferromagnetischen Zwischenschichten aus dem verdünnten Ferromagneten PdNi. Die Ringe werden mit Hilfe der Schattenmaskentechnik unter drei verschiedenen Winkeln aufgedampft, wobei hochtemperaturstabile Schattenmasken auf Basis von Polyethersulfon und Ge verwendet werden. Jeder einzelne Ring wird auf die aktive Fläche eines Mikro-Hall Sensors, hergestellt aus einer GaAs/AlGaAs Heterostruktur, aufgebracht. Der Mikro-Hall Sensor misst das magnetische Moment, das von den zirkulierenden Strömen im Ring hervorgerufen wird. Durch Variation des extern angelegten magnetischen Feldes kann die Phasendifferenz am Josephson Kontakt eingestellt werden. Die magnetische Antwort der Ringe bei Variation des angelegten Feldes lässt auf den pi-Charakter der ferromagnetischen Kontakte schliessen. Das Hauptresultat dieser Arbeit ist die Messung des magnetischen Moments, hervorgerufen durch einen spontanen Suprastrom, der im pi-Ring beim Abkühlen im Nullfeld anspringt. Diese Beobachtung kann mit Hilfe der halbzahligen Flussquantisierung in pi-Ringen erklärt werden. Darüber hinaus wurden ferromagnetische Josephson Kontakte mit Schichtdicken nahe am 0-pi Übergang untersucht. Am 0-pi Übergang ist der kritische Strom der Kontakte besonders klein und es wird erwartet, dass sich die Periodizität der zugehörigen Strom-Phasen Relation von 2pi auf pi halbiert. Obwohl die Messungen an diesen Ringen interessante Effekt zeigen, konnten die Ergebnisse zu diesen speziellen Josephson Kontakten innerhalb dieser Arbeit nicht schlüssig interpretiert werden.
