Abstract (English)
Dispersal in space is one of the fundamental processes in the life cycle of each plant. Therefore, a risk assessment for plant species in the context of conservation biology requires both the knowledge concerning losses or changes of dispersal processes in our landscape and methods to predict the dispersal potential of a species. In the first part of this thesis it is illustrated that during the evolution of the Central European landscape there was a permanent change of processes affecting the dispersability of plants. The highest diversity of dispersal processes combined with a high diversity of land use practices existed in the traditional man-made landscape, e.g. the spread of impure seed, the use of a big variety of materials as fertilizer, artificial flooding of meadows or mobile forms of livestock husbandry. Most of these processes changed or became completely lost in the actual man-made landscape. Whereas in the traditional man-made landscape all habitats were connected due to alternating management practices or grazing, today most habitats are isolated. Important dispersal processes of modern times, as those caused by traffic, cannot substitute dispersal vectors and processes of the traditional man-made landscape. The consideration of historical dispersal processes or vectors should therefore be a basic element in the restoration of habitats. If a reestablishment is not possible, these processes have to be simulated or replaced by other ones. In the second part of this thesis, three approaches aiming at a quantification of a species' dispersal potential are presented. The first approach, the dispersal data base »Diasporus«, contains a collection of documented dispersal modes as well as other data or traits relevant for dispersal. Besides dispersal relevant traits of the adult plant or the diaspore (time and period of dispersal, diaspore production, release height, xero- or hygrochasy, diaspore size, shape, weight, specific gravity, structure of the diaspore surface, hardseededness), indicator parameters, aggregating various morphological traits, are considered. Standard methods for the calculation of these indicator parameters (terminal velocity, buoyancy, attachment capacity and digestion resistance) are proposed. Some examples for the application of the database are given. In a second approach, the possibility of an assessment of dispersal potential by standardized laboratory methods is tested, exemplified for endozoochory The approaches are related to the results of a feeding experiment with diaspores of 14 plant species fed to cattle and sheep. The effects of mastication, microbial and chemical digestion as the basic digestion steps in ruminants are simulated by three different approaches: in vitro-digestion, simulated mastication, and imbibition in anoxic water, each followed by acid immersion. Mastication, simulated by mechanical stress via an iron stick, followed by an immersion in HCl correlates strongly with the results of the feeding experiment, especially with the survival rates after passing the digestive tract of sheep. Because sheep provide a conservative estimate of a plant species' survival capacity when passing a ruminants gut, this method is recommended as a suitable standard method to estimate endozoochorous dispersal potential. In the third approach attributes of the diaspore and plant are tested for their qualification to predict endozoochorous dispersal potential. Basis of valuation are 1) various feeding experiments and 2) diaspores germinating in the dung of grazing herbivores. Diaspore and plant traits tested for their suitability to predict endozoochorous dispersal potential are diaspore morphology (length, width, height, shape), diaspore mass, specific gravity, seed bank longevity index, plant species' palatability and attributes of the seed or fruit coat (thickness, phenol content). Release height and diaspore supply on the pasture are included as further variables for species germinating in the dung of grazing livestock. Correlations between endozoochorous dispersal potential and the different traits evaluated are quite variable concerning the different approaches. In general, negative correlations are obtained between one of the morphological diaspore traits and diaspore frequency in herbivore dung. Nearly all data sets of germinated diaspores in the dung of grazing animals show highest correlations with the release height of the diaspore and diaspore supply on the pasture. The relevance of diaspore supply is also reflected by discriminant analysis, where it is in nearly all data sets the most important discriminating variable. Using discriminant analysis, however, no transferable statistic models, allowing a prediction of a species dispersal potential, can be identified. An assessment of endozoochorous dispersal potential by the chosen attributes of the diaspore and plant is therefore not possible.

Die räumliche Ausbreitung von Diasporen ist einer der elementaren Prozesse im Lebenszyklus einer Pflanze. Für die Gefährdungsanalyse von Pflanzen sind deshalb Kenntnisse hinsichtlich des Verlustes oder der Veränderung von Ausbreitungsprozessen ebenso grundlegend wie Methoden zur Abschätzung des Ausbreitungspotenzials einer Art. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit wird die Veränderung von Ausbreitungsprozessen in Mitteleuropa dargestellt. Während der Evolution der mitteleuropäischen Landschaft existierte ein permanenter Wandel an Prozessen, die die Ausbreitung von Pflanzen beeinflussten. Die höchste Diversität ausbreitungsrelevanter Prozesse, verbunden mit einer großen Vielfalt an Landnutzungsformen, existierte in der historischen Kulturlandschaft, so etwa die Ausbringung von verunreinigtem Saatgut, die Verwendung vielfältiger Materialien zur Düngung, Wiesenwässerung oder mobile Formen der Haustierhaltung. Das Gros dieser Prozesse hat sich in der heutigen Kulturlandschaft verändert oder ist völlig verschwunden. Während Lebensräume in der historischen Kulturlandschaft durch alternierende Bewirtschaftungsformen oder Beweidung vernetzt waren, sind Habitate heute weitgehend isoliert. Bedeutende Ausbreitungsprozesse der Gegenwart, wie solche, die durch den Verkehr verursacht werden, können die Prozesse der früheren Kulturlandschaft nicht ersetzen. Historische Ausbreitungsvektoren und -prozesse sollten deshalb bei der Wiederherstellung von Lebensräumen berücksichtigt und, sofern sie nicht reaktivierbar sind, simuliert oder ersetzt werden. Gegenstand des zweiten Teils dieser Arbeit sind drei Ansätze zur Quantifizierung des Ausbreitungspotenzials. Der erste Ansatz, die Ausbreitungsdatenbank »Diasporus«, beinhaltet eine Sammlung dokumentierter Ausbreitungsmodi von Diasporen sowie von weiteren ausbreitungsrelevanten Daten. Neben Merkmalen der Pflanze oder Diaspore (Diasporenproduktion, Ausstreuzeitpunkt, -dauer, -höhe, Xero-, Hygrochasie, Diasporengröße, -form, -gewicht, -morphologie, Hartschaligkeit) werden auch aggregierte Merkmale bzw. Indikatoreigenschaften (Fallgeschwindigkeit, Schwimmfähigkeit, Anheftungsvermögen, Verdauungsresistenz) berücksichtigt, zu deren Bestimmung standardisierte Messverfahren vorgeschlagen werden. Im Hinblick auf Gefährdungsanalysen von Pflanzen werden Anwendungsmöglichkeiten der Datenbank illustriert. Der zweite Ansatz prüft die Möglichkeit einer Abschätzung des Ausbreitungspotenzials mit Hilfe standardisierter experimenteller Methoden am Beispiel der Endozoochorie. Bewertungsgrundlage ist ein Fütterungsversuch mit Diasporen von 14 an Schafe und Rinder verfütterten Pflanzenarten. Die Effekte des Kauens, der mikrobiellen und chemischen Verdauung, als den wesentlichen Verdauungsschritten beim Wiederkäuer, werden durch verschiedene Methoden simuliert: in vitro-Verdauung, simuliertes Kauen, Einquellen in anaerobem Wasser, jeweils mit anschließendem Säurebad. Die Überlebensraten nach der Simulation des Kauprozesses mit anschließendem Säurebad zeigen hochsignifikante Korrelationen mit den Überlebensraten nach in vivo-Verdauung, insbesondere mit den Überlebensraten nach Passage des Verdauungstraktes von Schafen. Da eine Orientierung am Schaf eine konservative Abschätzung des endozoochoren Ausbreitungspotentials ergibt, wird das simulierte Kauen mit anschließendem Säurebad als Standardmethode zur Abschätzung des endozoochoren Ausbreitungspotentials empfohlen. Der dritte Ansatz befasst sich mit den Möglichkeiten einer Ableitung des endozoochoren Ausbreitungspotenzials anhand von Diasporen- und Pflanzenmerkmalen. Die Eignung der Merkmale wird zum einen anhand der im Rahmen von Fütterungsversuchen ermittelten Überlebensraten und zum anderen anhand des Diasporengehalts im Dung weidender Herbivoren getestet. Folgende Merkmale werden untersucht: Diasporenmasse, -morphologie (Länge, Breite, Dicke, Form), spezifisches Gewicht, Persistenz in der Diasporenbank, Schmackhaftigkeit sowie Dicke und Phenolgehalt der Samenschale. Ferner wird der Einfluss von Ausstreuhöhe und Diasporenangebot auf den Diasporengehalt im Dung weidender Herbivoren getestet. Der Zusammenhang zwischen endozoochorem Ausbreitungspotenzial und den erhobenen Merkmalen ist bei den verschiedenen Ansätzen unterschiedlich. Generell ergibt sich ein Trend zu negativen Korrelationen zwischen einem der morphologischen Diasporenmerkmale und der Häufigkeit im Dung. Für den Diasporengehalt im Dung weidender Herbivoren ergeben sich die höchsten Korrelationen mit der Ausstreuhöhe und dem Diasporenangebot auf der Weide. Die Bedeutung dieser Merkmale spiegelt sich auch in den durchgeführten Diskriminzanalysen wider. Ein übertragbares Modell, mit dem die Prognose des Ausbreitungspotenzials anhand der ausgewählten Variablen möglich gewesen wäre, kann mit dieser statistischen Methode allerdings nicht entwickelt werden. Damit ist eine Ableitung des endozoochoren Ausbreitungspotenzials anhand der untersuchten Diasporen- und Pflanzenmerkmale nicht möglich.
