Abstract (German)

Das teilkristalline Polymer Polyhydroxybutyrat (PHB) ist ein
bakteriell hergestellter Polyester und daher biokompatibel und
vollständig biologisch abbaubar. Seine Eigenschaften ähneln
denen einiger konventioneller Kunststoffe wie Polyethylen (PE).
Allerdings zeigt sein mechanisches Verhalten ungünstige
Veränderungen mit der Zeit - ein Alterungsprozess findet statt.
Bisher ist nicht zufriedenstellend verstanden, warum Proben, die
bei Zimmertemperatur auskristallisiert wurden, mit der Zeit
zunehmend verspröden.
Durch den Vergleich der Ergebnisse aus verschiedenen strukturellen
Methoden mit mechanischen Messungen haben wir die
Alterungsmechanismen herausgearbeitet. Wir fanden heraus, dass
sowohl eine progressive Kristallisation als auch eine
physikalische Alterung für das Alterungsphänomen verantwortlich
sind.
Auf der Grundlage dieses Wissens haben wir verschiedene
Behandlungsmöglichkeiten zur Verhinderung der fortschreitenden
Versprödung an den Proben getestet. Dazu zählen Tempern, Einsatz
von Weichmachern und eine Bestrahlung mit Elektronen. Bestimmte
Temperbehandlungen waren geeignet, um die progressive
Kristallisation des Materials zu stoppen, wohingegen die
physikalische Alterung dadurch nicht verhindert werden konnte. Di-
und Triethylenglykol stellten sich als brauchbare Weichmacher
heraus. Die mechanischen Eigenschaften von PHB konnten damit sogar
in gealterten Proben verbessert werden. Am erfolgreichsten war
jedoch eine Elektronenbestrahlung von Proben im amorphen Zustand -
eine Schmelzbestrahlung. Ein elastisches Netzwerk konnte in den
amorphen Bereichen erzeugt werden, obwohl die Proben
hochkristallin waren. Diese neue PHB-Morphologie weist die
gewünschten elastischen mechanischen Eigenschaften auf, wobei die
Proben nicht mehr zur Alterung neigen.

The semicrystalline polymer polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a
bacterially processed polyester and therefore biocompatible and
completely biodegradable. Its properties are similar to those of
some conventional plastics such as polyethylene (PE). However, its
mechanical characteristics show detrimental changes with time - an
ageing process occurs. It is not yet satisfactorily understood
why samples crystallised at room temperature embrittle
increasingly with time.
Using various structural analysis methods and comparing the
results with those obtained by mechanical measurements we
investigated the mechanisms of ageing and found that both a
progressive crystallisation process and physical
ageing are responsible for the ageing phenomenon.
On the basis of that knowledge we tried out different treatments
on the samples in order to prevent the progressive embrittlement.
These were annealing treatments, incorporation of plastizisers
into the polymer matrix and irradiation of samples with electrons.
Specific annealing treatments were suitable to stop the
progressive crystallisation of the material, whereas physical
ageing of the amorphous chains could not be prevented this way.
Di- and triethylene glycol turned out to be useful plastizisers
and were able to improve the mechanical properties of PHB, even in
aged samples. The most successful method, however, was found to be
an irradiation treatment on amorphous samples - a melt
irradiation. An elastic network could be established within the
amorphous regions, even though the samples were highly
crystalline. This new PHB morphology shows the desired elastic
mechanical properties, and the samples are no longer prone to
ageing.
