Abstract (English)
In my study I explore representations of responses to lynching in order to define the characteristics of a rhetorical tradition of resistance. My central arguments is that anti-lynching texts evolve as the deconstruction of the dominant racial binary and power structures by reiterating, re-appropriating and re-inscribing elements and strategies of the dominant discourse about lynching. I therefore define reiteration with a difference as the basic mechanism of resistance. Exploiting the ambivalent nature of lynching discourse, anti-lynching rhetoric repeats the concepts and structures found in the dominant discourse, but only to exceed the rigid logic of racial binaries and thus expose the intrinsic contradictions of lynching from within. Consequently, the rhetoric of anti-lynching is also essentially a discourse of difference � however with one significant modification: whereas lynching in apologetic representations functions as the ultimate trope of racial difference, its use in resistance discourse denotes an interracial or even de-racialized sameness. The staging of resistance from within and the re-appropriation rather than direct contradiction of the arguments and strategies used in defense of lynching, epitomizes the most outstanding characteristic of African-American responses to lynching.
The major part of my study is concerned with defining how anti-lynching attempts to create sameness where the rhetoric of lynching imposes racial otherness. Significantly, the formulation of sameness and otherness mainly evolves within the categories and meanings provided by the rhetoric of lynching. However, anti-lynching rhetoric dissociates them from their integration into the Manichean allegory of race. It presents black and white as identical in terms of gender or morality and makes lynching a threat to this factual sameness. In other words, anti-lynching constructs another binary but makes opposition to lynching not race its major division.
I distinguished between two major strategies to create sameness. The first strand of anti-lynching texts tries to create sameness by using the concept of civilization as a matter of interracial concern. Anti-lynching rhetoric reiterates the association of lynching and civilization but challenges the signification of both. Lynching is figured as barbaric practice which threatens not only the lives of African-Americans but primarily American civilization. The protest against lynching then becomes the only true contribution to the advancement of civilization.
Later writings are far more skeptical about the practicability of civilization as a means of creating interracial sameness. They record the conclusion of this pattern of resistance and register the failure of civilization to provide a common ground for both races to meet. Instead they point to the impossibility of sameness.
The other set of anti-lynching texts comprises a domesticated form of resistance. Domestic anti-lynching texts represent lynching as the psychological and emotional pain of a black mother and formulate an alternative domesticated account of lynching which reinterprets and resituates the outcome of lynching in the domestic sphere. Motherhood is employed as an essentialist, interracial sameness, with the intent of seeking a sympathetic white female audience and instigating the latter's affective identification with their sisters of color.
Similar to the use of civilization, I also chronicled the gradual demise of the domestic tradition. While still dependent on the domestic as the prime means to present resistance, later anti-lynching texts abandon the creation of interracial sameness and instead focus their attempts to oppose lynching on unilateral solutions. Rather than functioning as an interracial commonality, motherhood here serves primarily to demonstrate the devastating effects of lynching.

Das Anliegen meiner Dissertation ist die Herausarbeitung der Charakteristika einer rhetorischen Tradition des Widerstandes gegen Lynching. Als zentrales Merkmal von Anti-Lynching-Texten definiert meine Dissertation dabei eine Strategie der Dekonstruktion von binär formulierten Machtstrukturen. Bedeutsam ist, dass sich diese Dekonstruktion nicht durch das Wiederlegen sondern die Neudefinition von bestimmten Elementen des dominanten Diskurses über Lynching vollzieht. Ich bezeichne diese Strategie als "reiteration with a difference". Die Anti-Lynching-Rhetorik macht sich dabei vor allem die ambivalente Natur des Lynching-Diskurses zu Nutze. Sie verwendet Konzepte und Strukturen des dominanten Diskurses � allerdings nur, um die rigide Logik der rassischen Binaritäten zu übersteigern und damit ihre inhärenten Widersprüche aufzudecken. Folglich ist auch die Anti-Lynching-Rhetorik im Grunde ein Diskurs der Differenz. Allerdings unterscheidet sich die Formulierung dieser Differenz auf signifikante Weise: während Lynching in apologetischen Repräsentation als ultimative Einsetzung einer grundlegenden, rassischen Differenz fungiert, verwendet der Diskurs des Widerstandes Lynching als Tropus einer ultimativen Gleichheit. Diese Strategie der Neudefinition ist das herausragendste Merkmal des Afro-Amerikanischen Widerstandes gegen Lynching.
Der Hauptteil meiner Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie Anti-Lynching-Rhetorik versucht Gemeinsamkeiten zu erzeugen. Die Formulierung von Gemeinsamkeiten und Differenzen vollzieht sich stets innerhalb der Kategorien, welche auch in der Lynching-Rhetorik verwendet werden. Anti-Lynching-Rhetorik löst diese Kategorien allerdings aus der Manichäischen Rassen-Allegorie heraus. Schwarze und Weiße werden als identisch hinsichtlich ihrer moralischen Werte oder ihrer Definitionen von Gender-Respektabilität dargestellt. Gleichzeitig wird Lynching als eine Beeinträchtigung dieser Gemeinsamkeiten definiert. Mit anderen Worten, Anti-Lynching erzeugt eine erneute Dichotomie, die sich allerdings nicht mehr als Unterstützung von sondern Widerstand gegen Lynching definiert.
Bei der Formulierung dieser Gemeinsamkeiten können zwei Strategien unterschieden werden. Die erste Strategie versucht Gemeinsamkeiten zu generieren indem sie Zivilisation als ein beiden Rassen gemeinsames Ideal postuliert. Anti-Lynching-Rhetorik unterminiert dabei die bestehenden Assoziierung von Lynching und Zivilisation. Lynching wird als barbarisches Ritual dargestellt, welches nicht nur die physische Unversehrtheit von Afro-Amerikanern bedroht, sondern vor allem die Prinzipien, auf denen sich die amerikanische Zivilisation gründet. Der Widerstand gegen Lynching wird damit zum einzig möglich Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung dieser Zivilisation. Später verfasste Anti-Lynching-Texte sind deutlich skeptischer bei der Verwendung von Zivilisation als rassenübergreifende und �vereinende Gemeinsamkeit. Sie stellen den Abschluss der zuvor definierten Strategie dar und dokumentieren das Versagen von Zivilisation, als gemeinsame Basis für beide Rassen zu fungieren. Gleichzeitig postulieren sie die Unmöglichkeit von Gemeinsamkeiten.
Die zweite Strategie zur Formulierung von Gemeinsamkeiten beinhaltet eine domestizierte Form des Widerstandes. Domestizierte Anti-Lynching-Texte reflektieren Lynching als den psychologischen und emotionalen Schmerz von Afro-Amerikanischen Müttern. Sie produzieren damit eine alternative Darstellung, die Lynching reinterpretiert und re-situiert. Das Konzept der Mutterschaft wird als essentialistische, beiden Rassen gemeinsame Gemeinsamkeit verwendet. Das Ziel dieser Strategie ist es, weiße Frauen anzusprechen und ihre Identifikation mit ihren schwarzen Schwestern zu erreichen. Ähnlich wie die zuvor beschriebene Strategie, beschäftigt sich meine Dissertation auch mit der Desintegration der Strategie zu Generierung einer domestizierten Gemeinsamkeit. Während später verfasste Texte Mutterschaft weiterhin als zentrales Element zur Darstellung von Widerstand heranziehen, verwenden sie es jedoch nicht mehr zur Generierung von rassen-übergreifenden Gemeinsamkeiten. Vielmehr repräsentieren sie den Widerstand gegen Lynching als unilaterales Unterfangen. Mutterschaft ist nicht mehr eine rassen-übergreifende Gemeinsamkeit sondern dient nun dazu, das Bedrohungspotential von Lynching zu veranschaulichen.
