Abstract (German)

Die Dissertation untersucht die Formierung der deutschen Fürstenopposition gegen Karl V. nach dem Ende des Schmalkaldischen Krieges und dem Augsburger Reichstag von 1547/48 bis hin zum Ausbruch des Fürstenkrieges, organisiert von Kurfürst Moritz von Sachsen, im Frühjahr 1552 und dem Kriegsende im Passauer Vertrag vom August 1552.

Vor dem Hintergrund des Antagonismus der Häuser Habsburg und Valois werden die internationalen Verflechtungen der deutschen Fürsten, Kaiser Karls V. und seines Bruders König Ferdinand einbezogen, ebenso die Interessen des französischen Königs Heinrich II. in seiner Beteiligung am Kriegszug gegen den Kaiser und der Besetzung des "Trois-Évêchés" Metz, Toul und Verdun.

Unter den kriegsbegründenden Schlagworten von "Ehre" und "Freiheit" wird der Motivationshorizont der deutschen Oppositionellen und ihres ausländischen Verbündeten Frankreich analysiert. Allgemeine wie individuelle reichspolitische und konfessionspolitische Zielsetzungen der aufständischen Fürsten, ihrer Verbündeten und ihrer Gegner sowie der Beteiligten an den Friedensverhandlungen in Linz und Passau werden dabei zu einer Interpretation reichsständischer Politik zusammengesetzt, die den allgemeinen Landfrieden vor die Einigkeit in der Religion stellte und im Passauer Vertrag den Vorlauf für den Augsburger Religionsfrieden von 1555 formulierte.

Translation of the abstract (English)

The doctoral thesis discusses the formation of the German princes' opposition against Charles V. after the Schmalkaldic War and the diet of Augsburg 1547/48 up to the princes' rebellion, organised by the Elector Maurice of Saxony, in spring 1552 and its end in the treaty of Passau in August 1552.

With the antagonism of Habsburg and Valois in mind, the international connections of the oppositional German princes, Emperor Charles V. and his brother, King Ferdinand, are reviewed, as well as the interests of Henry II., King of France, who participated in the war against the emperor and occupied the "Trois-Évêchés" Metz, Toul, and Verdun.

Tracing the war-justifying catchwords of "honour" and "freedom", the thesis analyses the motivation of the German princes' opposition and their foreign ally France. Both common and individual political and confessional aims of the war-faring princes, of their allies and enemies, and of the participants in the peace negotiations in Linz and Passau are put together to an interpretation of corporative politics of the imperial estates which placed general peace before religious unity and thus formulated the precursor for the Peace of Augsburg in 1555.
