With the aid of a database on tumour patients, the progressive course of disease and the postoperative outcome of pT3- and pT4 thyroid cancer patients, being operated on at the University Hospital of Regensburg between 1993 and 2004, could be demonstrated. The objective of this thesis was both creating a database and registering the patients´ postoperative course of disease.
81% of all cases were therapied with a radioiodid therapy according to standard guidelines, but also radiation and chemotherapy was applied.
The postoperative treatment comprised both regular checks on the tumour markers and sono- and scintygraphies.
In the ongoing course of the treatments also further operations had to be done, above all recrudescence at the primary location.
In our collective the paresis of N. Laryngeus recurrens was the most frequent postoperative complication, which is comparable with other studies on that topic.
It could be shown that remission and progression was more often the case with T4 or R2 patients, an outcome that was also verified by 5-year survivals.
Consequently, you can assume that operations aiming at an R0 status and optimal postoperative treatment can reduce the number of complications and improve the patients´ survival.
