ABCA1 is one of the major regulators of hepatic and peripheral cholesterol metabolism. Changes in ABCA1 expression greatly influence cholesterol production in the liver and reverse cholesterol transport from peripheral tissues back to the liver, which is closely related to manifestation of atherosclerosis.
