Abstract

The complex [CrI(CO)5I] is characterized by a long-wavelength absorption at λmax 638 nm. This band is assigned to a ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition from iodide (π) to CrI (t2g). Upon LMCT excitation the complex undergoes a photoredox reaction with a quantum yield φ 0.01 according to the equation: [CrI(CO)5I] + CH3CN → [Cr0(CO)5CH3CN] + I/2 I2. This reaction takes place also thermally.
