A review. The potential of natural products as sources for new drugs and lead structures is still largely unexplored and due to their unmatched structural diversity, secondary natural products continue to play a highly significant role in drug discovery. This article gives an overview on different strategies, chem. and biol. methods as well as limiting problems for the search, screening, isolation, and characterization of bioactive natural products from different sources. Ecol. aspects and the importance of biodiversity and sustainable sourcing are also discussed.
