Antimycobacterial properties of N-alkylbenzylamines

A no. of N-alkylbenzylamines were tested for antimycobacterial activity against various strains of Mycobacterium, as were many commonly used tuberculostatics. N-butyl-3-fluorobenzylamine (I) [60509-34-4] was the most active of the alkylbenzylamines, but pronounced inhibitory activity was also shown by N-butylbenzylamines with 3-chloro, 3-iodo, 3-nitro, or 4-dimethylamino substituents.
