Abstract

Terminally differentiating erythrocytes degrade most of their RNA with subsequent release of mononucleotides. Pyrimidine mononucleotides are preferentially cleaved by an erythrocyte-specific pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase; deficiency of this enzyme causes hemolytic anemia in humans.
