Surfactants are well-known every-day life products. Since they get in huge amount in the environment, it is still nowadays a task to further improve their biocompatibility and simultaneously their performance. The classical soaps, the sodium and potassium salts of fatty acids, are desirable in terms of their environmental compatibility, but they are restricted on the other hand in their applicability due to their limited solubility in water. The present work describes how choline ((2-hydroxyethyl)trimethylammonium) - a natural metabolite – can be used to enhance considerably the water solubility of fatty acid soaps, while maintaining their biocompatibility. Choline fatty acids soaps have been synthesized and deeply investigated by the establishments of their binary aqueous phase diagrams and the use of several experimental techniques such as polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. Their biocompatibility was studied by cytotoxicity and biodegradability measurements. In addition, choline alkyl sulfates, recently patented by the University of Regensburg, will be introduced as new promising class of biocompatible anionic surfactants. Finally, it will be shown that choline is not only efficient in enhancing the water solubility of anionic surfactants, but also in reducing the melting points of salts such that novel green ionic liquids could be designed.

Da sie in großem Umfang in die Umwelt gelangen, besteht auch heutzutage die Aufgabe ihre Bioverträglichkeit zu verbessern und gleichzeitig Ihre Leistung zu bewahren bzw. zu steigern. Die klassischen Seifen, die Natrium- und Kaliumsalze der Fettsäuren, genügen zwar dem Anspruch der Umweltverträglichkeit, sind aber auf der anderen Seite limitiert in ihrer Anwendbarkeit aufgrund ihrer begrenzten Wasserlöslichkeit. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt wie Cholin ((2-Hydroxyethyl)trimethylammonium) – ein natürlicher Metabolit – eingesetzt als Gegenion die Wasserlöslichkeit von Fettsäureseifen beträchtlich steigern kann, während gleichzeitig die biologische Verträglichkeit gewahrt bleibt. Cholinfettsäureseifen wurden synthetisiert und anhand binärer wässriger Phasendiagramme eingehend charakterisiert unter der Verwendung verschiedener experimenteller Techniken wie Polarisationsmikroskopie, Differentialkalorimetrie oder Klein- und Weitwinkel Röntgenstreuung. Ihre Biokompatibilität wurde mit Zytotoxizitäts- und Bioabbaubarkeitstests bestätigt. Darüber hinaus werden Cholinalkylsulfate als neuartige biokompatible Tenside vorgestellt, die kürzlich von der Universität Regensburg patentiert wurden. Außerdem wird gezeigt, dass Cholin nicht nur geeignet ist um die Wasserlöslichkeit von Tensiden zu erhöhen, sondern auch sehr effizient ist um die Schmelzpunkte von Salzen herab zu setzen, so dass gezielt innovative „grüne“ ionische Flüssigkeiten hergestellt werden konnten.
