This dissertation analyses the „Letter concerning Toleration“ by the English philosopher John Locke. Locke’s religious-political work was published in London in 1689 after the „Glorious Revolution“ and constituted an important contribution to the contemporary discussion on religious tolerance granted by state authorities. The dissertation starts off with an effort to define the abstract term „tolerance“ and continues by outlining the term’s development in Continental Europe during the various epoches. In doing so, the dissertation illustrates the most significant steps of development covering, e.g., early Christianity in old Rome, Christianity’s rise to state religion and contentual innovations in the New Testament regarding the treatment of dissenters with a special focus on the thoughts of Augustinus, Thomas of Aquin, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Martin Luther. Special attention is paid to England‘s religious-political situation from the beginnings of the Anglican Church in 1534 to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. In addition to historical connections, dissenting protestant sects like baptists, puritans, presbyterians, latitudinarians, independents and deists are presented. Moreover, the dissertation works out central recurrent ideas of Locke’s works ending up with the „Letter concerning Toleration“, e.g., the idea of God, the role of the Law of Nature, knowledge, reason, faith, the development of a political and religious society and the question of indifferent and important things in matters of religion, on the basis of the works „Essays on the Law of Nature“, „Essay concerning Human Understanding“ “, „On the Conduct of Understanding“, Two Treatises on Government“, „Two Tracts on Government“ and finally „Essay concerning Toleration“. After that, the dissertation comprehensively deals with the content of the „Letter concerning Toleration“ including, e.g., Locke’s dispute with the critic Jonas Proast. The dissertation finishes by illustrating the effects of the „Letter concerning Toleration“ on 17th century England and upcoming times.
