Abstract (English)

Scanning probe methods on insulating films offer a rich toolbox to study electronic, structural and spin properties of individual molecules. This work discusses three issues in the field of molecular and organic electronics.
A scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) head to be operated in high magnetic fields has been designed and built up. The STM head is very compact and rigid relying on a robust coarse approach mechanism. This will facilitate investigations of the spin properties of individual molecules in the future.
Combined scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies revealed a reversible molecular switch based on two stable configurations of DBTH molecules on ultrathin NaCl films. AFM experiments visualize the molecular structure in both states. Our experiments allowed to unambiguous determination of the pathway of the switch.
Finally, tunneling into and out of the frontier molecular orbitals of pentacene molecules has been investigated on different insulating films. These experiments show that the local symmetry of initial and final electron wave function are decisive for the ratio between elastic and vibration-assisted tunneling. The results can be generalized to electron transport in organic materials.

Rastersondenmethoden auf Isolatorschichten eröffnen vielfältige Möglichkeiten, um elektronische, strukturelle und Spin-Eigenschaften einzelner Moleküle zu untersuchen. Die vorgelegte Arbeit behandelt drei Themen im Feld der molekularen und organischen Elektronik.
Zum Betrieb in hohen Magnetfeldern wurde ein Mikroskopkopf für die Rastertunnelmikroskopie (scanning tunneling microscopy, STM) entwickelt und aufgebaut. Dieser STM-Kopf, der sehr kompakt und steif ist, basiert auf einem zuverlässigen Mechanismus zur Grobannäherung der Spitze. In Zukunft ermöglicht uns diese Entwicklung weitergehende Untersuchungen der Spin-Eigenschaften einzelner Moleküle.
In kombinierten Rastertunnel- und Rasterkraftmikroskopie (atomic force microscopy, AFM) Experimenten wurde ein molekularer Schalter entdeckt, der auf zwei stabilen Konfigurationen von DBTH-Molekülen auf ultradünnen NaCl-Filmen basiert. Mittels AFM-Experimenten konnte die molekulare Struktur in beiden Zuständen abgebildet werden. Mithilfe unserer Experimente konnten wir eindeutig den Reaktionspfad des Schalters bestimmen.
Schließlich wurde Tunneln in und aus den Grenzorbitalen von Pentacen auf verschiedenen Isolatorfilmen untersucht. Hierbei konnte gezeigt werden, dass die lokale Symmetrie der Elektronenwellenfunktionen im Ausgangs- und Endzustand entscheidend ist für das Verhältnis von elastischem zu vibrations-unterstütztem (vibration-assisted) Tunneln. Diese Resultate können auf den Elektronentransport in organischen Materialien verallgemeinert werden.
