Abstract (English)

Scanning probe microscopy techniques offer the unique possibility to characterize and manipulate atomic-scale objects atom-by-atom. In this thesis, we study structural and electronic properties of single molecules, defects and atoms on two-monolayer thick NaCl islands on Cu(111) by a combination of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Specifically, we exploit the enhanced resolution obtained with functionalized tips; a deterministic chemical modification of the last atoms of the scanning probe tip.

First, the performance of different tip functionalizations is assessed and based on these findings, the underlying contrast mechanisms in AFM and KPFM could be identified. Next, different molecular model systems are examined to describe how important molecular properties such as chemical structure, bond order, adsorption geometry and intramolacular charge distribution can be measured by AFM. Thereby, current understanding of the qualitative and quantitative AFM and KPFM contrast is pushed forward.

Then, we apply atomic-resolution AFM and molecular orbital imaging by STM to identify and characterize synthetic products, purified natural compounds and complex mixtures. Finally, atomic manipulation is used to trigger chemical reactions on single molecules, to generate defect structures on the surface, to control the charge state of adatoms and mechanically actuate an atomic switch implemented by an embedded adatom.

Rastersondenmikroskopie bietet die einzigartige Möglichkeit Objekte auf atomarer Skala zu charakterisieren und zu manipulieren. In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir strukturelle und elektronische Eigenschaften von einzelnen Molekülen, Defekten und Atomen auf zwei Atomlagen dicken NaCl Filmen auf Cu(111) durch eine Kombination von Tieftemperatur Rastertunnelmikroskopie (STM), Rasterkraftmikroskopie (AFM) und Kelvin-Sonden-Kraftmikroskopie (KPFM). Im Besonderen nutzen wir die erhöhte Auflösung, die mit fuktionalisierten Spitzen (chemische Modifizerung der letzen Spitzenatome) erzielt werden kann.
Als Erstes werden die Eigenschaften verschiedener Spitzenfunktionalisierungen beurteilt und anhand davon der zugrundeliegende Kontrastmechanismus in AFM and KPFM identifiziert. Danach werden verschiedene molekulare Modelsysteme untersucht, um zu beschreiben wie wichtige Moleküleigenschaften wie die chemische Struktur, Bindungsordnung, Adsorptionsgeometrie und intramolekulare Ladungsverteilung durch AFM gemessen werden können. Dabei wird unser Verständnis des qualitativen und quantitaiven AFM- und KPFM-Kontrastes erweitert.
Dann wenden wir atomaraufgelöstes AFM und das Abbilden von Molekülorbitalen mittels STM zur Identifizierung und Characterisierung von synthetisierten Molekülen, gereinigten natürlichen Substanzen und komplexen Molekülgemischen an. Zum Schluss verwenden wir atomare Manipulation zur Auslösung chemischer Reaktionen in einzelnen Molekülen, zur Erzeugung von Defektstrukturen auf der Oberfläche, zur Steuerung des Ladungszustandes von Adatomen und zur Aktuierung eines atomaren Schalters implemenitiert durch ein eingebettetes Adatom.
