Abstract (English)

In this thesis the disorder-driven as well as the magnetic field-induced superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in TiN thin films are investigated. The SIT is considered as canonic example of a quantum phase transition. It is by no means trivial to find the exact transition point in magnetic field or disorder. For the field-induced SIT, crossing points in the magnetoresistance isotherms offer a distinct point to allocate the transition. In this work however, three apparent crossing points are found in the magnetoresistance isotherms at different temperature regimes. For each of these crossing points a phenomenological description of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the resistance is given at low magnetic fields below an observed magnetoresistance peak. At high magnetic fields, the temperature and field dependence of the resistance is explained by superconducting fluctuations above the upper critical field.

An analysis of the temperature dependences of the resistance at zero field and also at the magnetoresistance maximum was performed for samples with different degrees of disorder, where disorder is measured by the sheet resistance at room temperature. It is found that both the activation energy at the magnetoresistance maximum and the vortex BKT transition temperature at zero magnetic field depend on the sample size as well as on disorder. Both, the size dependences and the disorder dependences are argued to be consistent with the model of Josephson junction arrays.
Within a certain disorder range and sufficient low temperatures, the sample turns superconducting at zero magnetic field and undergoes a field induced SIT with thermally activated behaviour in the insulating state. The disorder-driven SIT is found to be accompanied by a vanishing vortex BKT transition temperature while the mean-field critical temperature remains finite. A finite critical temperature in the insulating regime indicates that the insulating state is produced by a localization of Cooper pairs.

Highly non-linear current-voltage characteristics at zero magnetic field for differently disordered square-shaped samples with different lateral sizes are explained by the theory of self-heating in superconducting microbridges. A dual picture to the superconducting current-voltage characteristics is found on the insulating side of the magnetic field induced SIT with interchanged current and voltage axes.

In dieser Dissertation werden sowohl der durch Unordnung verursachte als auch der durch ein Magnetfeld herbeigeführte Supraleiter-Isolator Übergang untersucht. Der Supraleiter-Isolator Übergang wird als kanonisches Beispiel eines Quanten-Phasen Übergangs betrachtet. Es ist keineswegs trivial den exakten Übergangspunkt in Bezug auf Unordung oder Magnetfeld zu finden. Im Falle des durch ein Magnetfeld herbeigeführten Supraleiter-Isolator Übergangs bieten Kreuzungspunkte in den Magnetowiderstandsisothermen einen deutlichen Punkt an dem der Übergang zugeordnet werden kann. Hier in dieser Arbeit wurden jedoch drei Kreuzungspunkte in den Magnetowiderstandsisothermen in drei unterschiedlichen Temperaturregimen gefunden. Für jeden dieser Kreuzungspunkte wurde eine phenomenoligische Beschreibung der Temperatur- und Feldabhängigkeit des Widerstands für kleine Magnetfelder unterhalb des beobachteten Magnetowiderstandsmaximums erarbeitet. Für hohe Magnetfelder konnte die Temperatur- und Feldabhängigkeit des Widerstands supraleitenden Fluktuationen obherhalb des oberen kritischen Feldes zugewiesen werden.

Es wurde die Temperaturabhängigkeit des Widerstands bei Nullfeld und auch am Magnetowiderstandsmaximum analysiert für Proben mit einem unterschiedlichen Grad an Unordung, der anhand des Quadratwiderstands bei Raumtemperatur gemessen wurde. Es wurde herausgefunden, dass sowohl die Aktivierungsenergie am Magnetowiderstandsmaximum als auch die vortex BKT Übergangstemperatur bei Nullfeld von der Probengröße und auch der Unordung abhängen. Sowohl die Abhängigkeiten von der Probengröße als auch die Abhangigkeiten voM Unordnungsgrad werden schlüssig mit dem Modell eines Netzwerks aus Josephson-gekoppelten supraleitenden Bereichen auf der Probe erklärt. Innerhalb eines bestimmten Unordungsintervalls und genügend tiefen Temperaturen, werden die gemessenen TiN Filme supraleitend bei Nullfeld und zeigen einen Supraleiter-Isolator Übergang durch Anlegen eines Magnetfeldes mit thermisch aktivierten Verhalten im isolierenden Zustand. Der durch Unordunung verursachte Supraleiter-Isolator Übergang wird begleitet von einer verschwindenden vortex BKT temperatur währenddessen die BCS kritische Temperatur endlich bleibt. Diese endliche kritische Temperatur deutet an, dass der isolierende Zustand durch eine Lokalisierung von Cooper Paaren hervorgebracht wird.

Höchst nichtlineare Strom-Spannungs Kennlinen bei Nullfeld für verschieden ungeordnete quadratische Proben mit unterschiedlichen Kantenlängen werden durch die Theoie des Selbst-Heizens in supraleitenden Mikrostrukturen erklärt. Auf der isolierenden Seite des Supraleiter-Isolator Übergangs wurde ein duales Bild zu den Strom-Spannungs Kennlinen auf der supraleitenden Seite gefunden wobei die Spannungs und die Stromachse durchgetauscht sind.
