Studienziel: Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die Rolle des Internets als Informationsmedium bei den ambulanten orthopädischen Patienten der Universitätsklinik Regensburg darzustellen. Methode: 631 Patienten der orthopädischen Ambulanz wurde bei Erstvorstellung ein 2-seitiger Fragebogen vorgelegt. Inhaltlich wurde nach demografischen Daten, Internetzugang, Ort der Informationsrecherche, Bewertung der Informationen aus dem Internet, die Einschätzung des eigenen Wissensstands und nach dem Interesse für mehr Informationsmöglichkeiten im Internet gefragt. In einem zweiten Fragebogen wurden 150 Patienten zu ihrer Zufriedenheit mit dem Internetauftritt der Asklepios-Klinik befragt. Ergebnisse: Die Anzahl der auswertbaren Fragebögen betrug 600 für den ersten und 66 für den zweiten Fragebogen. Insgesamt gaben 90% der Teilnehmer an, Zugang zum Internet zu haben. 56% nutzen die Möglichkeit, sich vor Besuch der Klinik im Internet zu informieren, damit war das Internet nach Fach- und Hausärzten die häufigste Informationsquelle. Hauptinformationsort war die Homepage der Asklepios-Klinik, gefolgt von Internetforen und Sonstigen (Wikipedia, Google etc.). Die Internetnutzer waren im Durchschnitt jünger (p<0,001), erzielten höhere Bildungsabschlüsse (p<0,001) und schätzten ihr eigenes Wissen höher ein (p<0,001), als die Nichtnutzer. Die Teilnehmer gaben an, dass die Informationen aus dem Internet mit denen des behandelnden Orthopäden in 20% vollständig und in 25% teilweise übereinstimmten. Im Durchschnitt beurteilten die Teilnehmer die Informationen aus dem Internet in der Kategorie „hilfreich“ mit 4,1 (Skala 1-7, 1 = schlechteste Wertung, 7 = beste Wertung) und in der Kategorie „vertrauenswürdig“ mit 4,0. Bei der Einschätzung des eigenen Wissensstands anhand der gleichen Skala lagen die Durchschnittswerte bei 4,1 beim eigenen Krankheitsbild und 3,1 und 3,4 bei Operationsverfahren und Operationsrisiken. 45% der Teilnehmer gaben an, dass sie gerne mehr Möglichkeiten zur Informationssuche im Internet haben würden. Beim zweiten Fragebogen ergab sich für den Gesamteindruck der Homepage der Asklepios-Klinik eine Bewertung von 2,1 (1= beste Wertung, 5 = schlechteste Wertung). Verbesserungsvorschläge bezogen sich auf den Informationsumfang zum Thema Krankheitsbilder und Ärzte sowie die Aktualität und Relevanz der dargebotenen Informationen. Schlussfolgerung: Das Internet war die zweithäufigste Informationsquelle nach den Ärzten und spielt damit eine entscheidende Rolle beim Informationsverhalten der ambulanten orthopädischen Patienten.

Aim: The objective of this research was to ascertain the importance of the internet as a source of information for orthopedic outpatients of the Asklepios Hospital in Bad Abbach (part of the University Hospital of Regensburg). Methods: 631 patients who visited the outpatient department of the university hospital consecutively were given a two-page questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to collect data on the following topics: demographics, internet access, sources of online information, rating of information available online1, self assessment of the patient’s knowledge and interest in having more opportunities to obtain medical information online. Additionally, a second questionnaire was handed out to 150 outpatients to assess the patient’s degree of satisfaction with the website of the Asklepios Hospital. Results: 600 out of the 631 and 66 out of the 150 questionnaires were considered relevant for statistical purposes. A total of 90% had internet access and another 56% used the internet for medical research prior to their appointment at the clinic. The main sources of information on the internet were the Asklepios Hospital website, message boards and some other websites (including Wikipedia, Google, etc.). Among the respondents, those who used the internet, were significantly younger (p<0.001), had higher educational qualification (p<0.001) and rated their own knowledge as higher (p<0.001) than non-users. 20% of the respondents stated that the information they obtained from the internet was in accordance with the information from their doctor, while 25% stated that it was only partially in agreement. The respondents rated the information on the internet in the category “helpful” with an average score of 4.1 (scale 1-7, 1 = worst, 7 = best) and in the category “trustworthy” with that of 4.0. When asked to rate their knowledge with regard to their own disease, the average was 4.1; with regard to operation risk and operation methods the average was lower with 3.1 and 3.4 respectively. 45% of the respondents would like to have more possibilities for obtaining information on the internet. The overall rating of the Asklepios website was 2.1 (scale 1-5, 1=best, 5 =worst). Most suggestions for improvement pointed to the amount of information on specific diseases and on the doctors as well as the relevance and up-to-dateness of the provided information. Conclusion: Apart from doctors, the internet was the second most important source of medical information and thus it plays a crucial role in the process of the information behavior of orthopedic outpatients.
