Erythropoietin (EPO) wird beim Erwachsenen hauptsächlich in den Nieren produziert. Hauptregulator der EPO-Gentranskription ist der Hypoxie-induzierbare Faktor 2 (HIF-2). Erythropoietin (EPO) is mainly produced in the kidneys in adults. Main regulator of the EPO gene transcription is the hypoxia inducible factor 2 (HIF-2). Under normoxic conditions the HIF-α subunit is hydroxylated by prolylhydroxylases (PHDs) and can therefore be recognized and ubiquitinated by the von Hippel-Lindau (Vhl) protein leading to its degradation.
