This work creates direct access to excitons in atomically thin van der Waals layered structures. Ultrafast NIR pump-MIR probe spectroscopy couples directly to an internal excitonic degree of freedom. In this way, the binding energy and formation dynamics of spatially indirect excitons in a van der Waals heterostructure, as well as the stacking angle-induced change in excitonic binding energy and lifetime in van der Waals homobilayers, could be directly observed. Furthermore, the strong coupling of an intra-excitonic resonance and polar phonons of an adjacent capping layer was investigated, and a concept for coherent pulse synthesis was elaborated, yielding tailored subcycle multi-THz waveforms.
