Cough and wheezing are common symptoms of acute bronchitis in childhood. These affect the lives of those affected and their relatives. Nocturnal symptoms have an impact on quality of life. Up to now, nocturnal symptoms have been recorded using subjective methods, which do not provide valid information. In this study, cough and wheezing were objectively recorded in children with acute bronchitis. The aim was to identify possible correlations between the objectively measured cough and wheezing events and the subjective methods of measurement using the physician-completed Bronchitis Severity Score (BSS) and the parent-completed cough log. Cough and wheezing were objectively recorded in 36 children on three measurement nights using the LEOSound monitor. The analysis of the collected data showed that coughing and wheezing events decreased over the course of the measurement. The subjective test parameters (BSS, cough log) correlated significantly with the objectively recorded cough epochs (BSS: n=102, r=.40, p<.001; cough log: n=105, r=.61, p<.001). Exploratory linear regression showed evidence that parental assessment (cough log) was superior to BSS as a predictor of cough events. It further emerged that wheezing may be a predictor of cough events in children with acute bronchitis.
