This dissertation provides applied and theoretical work which will help researchers in economics estimate causal effects more reliably. In this way, I show that even when a specific econometrics technique, instrumental variable (IV) estimation, does not seem suited, with the help of new methods from statistical learning, researchers can still retrieve informative estimates from the data. I connect the IV selection literature to applied econometric research and illustrate how researchers can easily apply it to the questions under study. I apply the methods to economic examples and improve on the existing methods by proposing an alternative selection method. The methods are also extended to settings which are likely to occur in reality.
