Abstract (English)

This work analyzes how null subject ("pro-drop") properties of Russian, Polish and Czech developed diachronically, based on quantitative and qualitative evaluations of two specifically constructed and one previously available digital corpus. It discusses the respective theoretical-linguistic background and the empirical facts, along with methodological solutions for diachronic corpus building. -- Modern Russian, Polish and Czech allow for dropping subject arguments, albeit under different conditions. While Czech and Polish are canonical null-subject languages (NSL), which realize a subject pronoun only to mark focus, contrast or a change of topic, Modern Standard Russian is a partial NSL, in which overt subject pronouns may well be backgrounded and coreferential ("weak"). Secondly, Czech, but not Russian or Polish, has developed expletive (semantically empty) subject pronouns. Thirdly, indefinite impersonals are usually realized as reflexive constructions in Czech and Polish, but as 3rd person plural constructions in Russian. The central research question for the present work is how this variation came about, given that the oldest documented stages of all three languages were very similar, all conforming to a canonical NSL pattern. Using logistic regression, it is shown that Russian changed to a partial NSL in 16th-17th century, at a constant rate with the loss of explicit 1st/2nd past tense forms. 3rd person weak subject pronouns came into broad use only later. Null 3pl indefinite subjects spread during the period of change towards a partial NSL. Expletive subjects are argued to have developed from agreeing adjectival demonstratives both in Czech and Polish, where they were lost again by the 17th c.

Die Arbeit analysiert die diachrone Entwicklung der Nullsubjekt-Eigenschaften ("pro-drop") im Russischen, Polnischen und Tschechischen anhand quantitativer und qualitativer Auswertungen zweier eigens konstruierter und eines bereits vorhandenen digitalen Korpus. Diskutiert werden die theoretisch-linguistischen Hintergründe und die empirischen Fakten sowie methodische Lösungen für den diachronen Korpusbau. – Russisch, Polnisch und Tschechisch erlauben heute die Auslassung von Subjektargumenten, wenn auch unter unterschiedlichen Bedingungen. Während Tschechisch und Polnisch kanonische Null-Subjekt-Sprachen (NSL) sind, die ein Subjektpronomen nur zur Markierung von Fokus, Kontrast oder einem Topikwechsel realisieren, ist das moderne Standardrussische eine partielle NSL, in der overte Subjektpronomen durchaus koreferentiell und Hintergrund ("schwach") sein können. Zweitens hat das Tschechische, aber nicht das Russische oder Polnische, expletive (semantisch leere) Subjektpronomina entwickelt. Drittens werden indefinite Impersonale im Tschechischen und Polnischen in der Regel als reflexive Konstruktionen realisiert, im Russischen jedoch als 3. Person Plural. Die zentrale Forschungsfrage für die vorliegende Arbeit ist, wie all diese Variation zustande kam, da die ältesten dokumentierten Stufen aller drei Sprachen noch in sehr ähnlicher Weise einem kanonischen NSL-Muster folgten. Mittels logistischer Regression wird gezeigt, dass das Russische im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert zu einer partiellen NSL überging, und zwar mit einer konstanten Veränderungsrate zum Verlust der expliziten Formen der 1. und 2. Person bei Vergangenheitsformen. Die schwachen Subjektpronomen der 3. Person kamen erst später breit in Gebrauch. Indefinite 3pl-Nullsubjekte verbreiteten sich parallel zum Übergang zu einer partiellen NSL. Expletivsubjekte haben sich - so die Argumentation - sowohl im Tschechischen als auch im Polnischen aus kongruierenden adjektivischen Demonstrativa entwickelt und gingen dann im Polnischen im 17. Jahrhundert wieder verloren.
