Abstract

Herein, we report a photocatalytic redox-neutral dehydration of native aryl-1,2-ethanediols to aryl methyl ketones. This mild reaction can be realized with a single organic photocatalyst and yields water as the sole by-product. Mechanistic studies suggest the product formation via a sequence of HAT / 1,2-spin-center shift (SCS) catalyzed by highly active mixture stemming from Eosin Y.
