Abstract (English)

This dissertation is about the “second life” of a city, Ragusa (Dubrovnik), after the loss of its independence in 1808. It speaks of cultural, political, and religious ideas that the elites of the peoples of what would later become Yugoslavia developed during the nineteenth century to define their own history and place in the world.
The focus of the research is the Serb-Catholic idea, a form of national identification that originated and developed precisely in Dubrovnik during the nineteenth century. Its history is told, drawing also on archival documents that show the relations between this political idea, the nineteenth-century nationalisms of Serbs and Croats, the universalism of the Catholic Church at its center (the Roman Curia) and the different attitude of one of its peripheries (the Croatian clergy of Dalmatia).
Through the analytical study of a corpus of documents (the postal correspondence received by Serb Catholic journalist Antun Fabris), a particular phase of the movement, between 1898 and 1904, is addressed, adopting and adapting the methodologies of historical network research.
Far from being an exclusively local issue, this story provides us with a documented perspective on the relationship between Catholicism and Croatian and Serbian nationalisms during the century in which they assumed their identity.

In dieser Dissertation geht es um das "zweite Leben" einer Stadt, Ragusa (Dubrovnik), nach dem Verlust ihrer Unabhängigkeit im Jahr 1808. Sie handelt von den kulturellen, politischen und religiösen Vorstellungen, die die Eliten der Völker des späteren Jugoslawiens im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelten, um ihre eigene Geschichte und ihren Platz in der Welt zu definieren.
Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht die serbisch-katholische Idee, eine Form der nationalen Identifikation, die ihren Ursprung und ihre Entwicklung in Dubrovnik im 19. Ihre Geschichte wird erzählt, wobei auch Archivdokumente herangezogen werden, die die Beziehungen zwischen dieser politischen Idee, den Nationalismen der Serben und Kroaten im 19. Jahrhundert, dem Universalismus der katholischen Kirche in ihrem Zentrum (der römischen Kurie) und der unterschiedlichen Haltung einer ihrer Peripherien (des kroatischen Klerus in Dalmatien) aufzeigen.
Durch die analytische Untersuchung eines Dokumentenkorpus (die Postkorrespondenz des serbischen katholischen Journalisten Antun Fabris) wird eine besondere Phase der Bewegung zwischen 1898 und 1904 untersucht, wobei die Methoden der historischen Netzwerkforschung übernommen und angepasst werden.
Diese Geschichte ist kein ausschließlich lokales Thema, sondern bietet uns eine dokumentierte Perspektive auf die Beziehung zwischen dem Katholizismus und dem kroatischen und serbischen Nationalismus in dem Jahrhundert, in dem sie ihre Identität annahmen.
