Scanning-CARS with tuning of the dye-laser generating the pump-wavelength for improved spectral resoln. was used for monitoring rotational temps. by evaluation of the contributions from the Q0 to Q5 transitions in the temp. range 240-260 K. H2-expansion through a nozzle of 200 mm internal diam. under room temp. and 0.5 atm stagnation pressure results in a rotational temp. of 240 K. The results also show the temp. detn. using several Q-branch intensity ratios and the concomitant scatter of exptl. data, typical +-3% after weighted averaging.
