Abstract
In an emergency further concomitant psychological trauma can be reduced and the medical treatment efficiently supported by the fact that patients in an extreme situation are often in a natural trance-like state of high suggestibility. Studies have shown that protection from the crowd, avoidance of inappropriate conversation and a simple text with positive suggestions can result in improved outcome of emergency patients. A corresponding patient communication must not disturb or delay medical treatment but should effectively support it. Protection from negative suggestions by thoughtless conversation, as well as from feelings of guilt and anger is essential. A confidential relationship for communication, the rapport, is to be established irrespective of a supposed unconsciousness, based on believability, serious concern, honesty and respect. The patient should be contacted in his current emotional situation to be utilized by pacing and leading inducing minimal changes which are perpetuated by their perception. With suggestions which are more imaginative than abstract, indirect and permissive rather than directive and authoritative, unconscious processes of inner search and resource activation can be elicited. This brings the patient out of paralyzing passivity and helplessness and helps regain self-control, self-confidence and self-esteem. Suggestion in this sense does not consist of making an individual believe what is not true, but making something come true by making a person believe in its possibility.
