Due to continuously increasing demands on the performance and efficiency of microelectronic devices, there is sustained interest in the development of novel technological concepts. One particularly promising approach is spintronics, which exploits not only the electron charge but also the electron spin as an additional degree of freedom for information processing and transmission. A key prerequisite for spintronic applications is the generation of robust and controllable spin currents. Owing to its excellent electronic transport properties, graphene is considered a highly suitable material for spin transport. However, the direct generation of spin currents in graphene is strongly limited by its very weak intrinsic spin–orbit coupling. This limitation can be overcome by exploiting proximity-induced spin–orbit coupling in van der Waals heterostructures composed of graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), such as WSe₂, thereby enabling the efficient generation of spin currents directly in graphene. Nevertheless, at the outset of this work, only limited understanding existed regarding the extent to which and the parameters by which proximity-induced spin–orbit coupling can be deliberately tuned and controlled. Against this background, the present work systematically investigates the factors influencing proximity-induced spin–orbit coupling in graphene/WSe₂ heterostructures. In particular, the effects of the WSe₂ layer thickness, the twist angle between graphene and WSe₂, and the interlayer distance between the two materials are analyzed. The results of this work provide a fundamental understanding of how proximity-induced spin–orbit coupling can be tuned and controlled and contribute to the targeted optimization of graphene-based spintronic devices.
