In order to develop a better understanding of the great potential of Cu-photoredox catalysis mechanistic investigations on Cu(I)- and Cu(II)-Catalysis was carried out. Basic concepts of its mechanisms have already been established, yet the detailed description of the proposed inner sphere pathways is still incomplete. In this thesis different tools of physical organic chemistry were used to investigate key intermediates of the radical deactivation pathway. This involved computational (DFT, TD-DFT), spectroscopical (EPR, NMR, UV/Vis) and synthetical approaches as well as close cooperation with organic synthetics. The importance of ligand exchange and substrate coordination was established in the study of the Copper(II)-photocatalyzed decarboxylative oxygenation of phenylacetic acids. The stabilizing effect of copper on radical intermediates was investigated in the stereoselective synthesis of α-mannosides. Mechanistic investigations on the Cu(I)-photocatalyzed bromonitroalkylation of olefins revealed crucial information on the kinetics of radical intermediates as well as the stabilization of radical intermediates via a deactivation pathway. This work adds valuable insight into opportunities and boundaries of Cu-photoredox catalysis and lays the computational groundwork for dynamic and multireference calculations.
