This paper reconstructs the provenance of a Polish uniform (object K 1940/70) held by the Historical Museum of Regensburg (Historisches Museum Regensburg), addressing three questions: Was the removal of the uniform lawful under the Hague Conventions and the 1929 Geneva Convention? Are the inventory entries concerning the object and the donor accurate? And was Partl’s donation authorized? The uniform sheds light on Wehrmacht units of Military District XIII (Wehrkreis XIII), their deployment in Poland in 1939, and local memory history. The accession register (Inventarbuch), correspondence, and the biography of the donor, Michael Partl, demonstrate that the object was entered into the inventory retroactively (i.e., backdated) and confirm its authenticity as war booty. Whether its removal was permissible under international law remains unresolved owing to a lack of sources.
