Der Begriff der Information wird detailliert vor dem Hintergrund der Informationsverständnisse aus der Alltags- und den Fachsprachen verschiedener wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen analysiert. Dabei zeigt sich die grundlegend semiotische Natur der Information, die eine Synthese des Zeichen- und Informationsbegriffs bzw. von Semiose und Informationsprozess erforderlich macht. Anstelle eines einheitlichen Informationsbegriffs, der als unmöglich zurückgewiesen werden muss, wird eine semiotische Informationskonzeption ausgearbeitet, die einen latenten Konsens in der Alltagsrede und Literatur über Information aufdeckt. Das vorgeschlagene Informationskonzept wird anhand verschiedener Informationsmodelle verifiziert und unterschiedliche Formen von Information ausdifferenziert.

The concept of information is analyzed in detail within the context of everyday language and scientific disciplines. Information will be considered as a fundamentally semiotic concept, which requires a synthesis of the concept of sign and information as well as of semiosis and information process. Instead of a unified information concept, which has to be rejected, a semiotic conception of information will be explicated that uncovers a latent consensus in everyday talk and scientific discussion about information. The concept of information proposed is verified against several models of information discussed in the literature, and specific forms of information are differentiated in detail.
