Fungistatic and bacteriostatic activities of some tertiary and quaternary beta -aminoketones were tested against a variety of microorganisms. Greatest activities (relative to that of formaldehyde) were obsd. for 1-dimethylamino-2-phenylbutan-3-one (I), 2-phenyl-3-dimethylaminopropiophenone (II), and their quaternary salts formed with methyl iodide. Quaternization of the beta -aminoketones generally increased the fungistatic activities, the most pronounced effect occurring with 3-diethyl-aminopropiophenone (III). The fungistatic action of the quaternary beta -aminoketones was attributed to their acylethylation reactions with biol. substrates rather than to transaminomethylation.
