AQP2 ist ein Kanalprotein in den Hauptzellen der Sammelrohre. Es wird Vasopressin-abhängig in die apikale Plasmamembran eingebaut, um Wasser aus dem Tubuluslumen zu resorbieren. Wenn kein Bedarf an AQP2-Kanälen besteht, wird es in intrazellulären Vesikeln gespeichert. Die Entstehung der Sammelrohre ist zum Teil bereits erforscht. AQP2 is abundant in the collecting duct principal cells and is the chief target for the regulation of collecting duct water reabsorption by vasopressin. It`s retained in an intracellular storage of vesicles and on demand it`s incorporated in the apical plasma membrane.
