Abstract
Studies on the Biosynthesis of Aloins in Aloe Arborescens Mill.
The formation of the naturally occuring diastereomeric aloins A and B was investigated in Aloe arborescens Mill. using 14C-labeled compounds. Aloin B is actively synthesized by the plant and transformed in part into aloin A. Feeding experiments with leaf disks proved the preferential incorporation of 2-14C-acetate into the aglycon moiety of aloin, while 14C-glucose is incorporated into the aglycon and sugar moieties. The rate of incorporation of 14C-glucose increases in the presence of aloe emodin anthrone, which is considered to be the C-glucosyl acceptor.
