Abstract (German)

Die Dissertation baut auf der Hypothese auf, dass Jelineks zwischen 1972 und 1992 entstandene Hörspiele literarisch vermittelte Angriffe gegen jene Mythen des Alltags sind, die Roland Barthes im gleichnamigen Essayband definiert. Die Erscheinungsformen des Mythos � der Aufstiegsgedanke, der Humanismus, der Individualismus und der bürgerliche Kunst- und Geniebegriff � sind in den Hörspielen Teile eines mythischen Wertesystems, das als Faktensystem wahrgenommen wird. Liebe, Körper, Sexualität, Weiblichkeit und Natur erscheinen in den Texten als gewachsene, an die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Erfordernisse angepasste Begriffe.
Diese Mythenkritik manifestiert sich in den Hörspielen als Sprachkritik. Denn Jelinek arbeitet intensiv mit vorgefertigtem Sprach- und Tonmaterial, um eine Sprache zu manipulieren, die sie als manipulativ empfindet. Ihre Ästhetik des Schreckens und die Vergröberung der Personen zu Prototypen ist von den visu¬ellen Medien inspiriert. Besonders die autonomen Radio-Projekte � d.h. jene, ohne Vorlage im Werk Jelineks selbst � orientieren sich an trivialen Gattungen wie z.B. der Vorabendserie und dem Heimatroman. Sie übernehmen deren charakteristische Sprache, Figurenkonstellation, Inhalte, Konflikte sowie deren Mangel an Handlung und Logik. Auch der autoritäre Stil ist den medialen Vorla¬gen entnommen und wird in den Hörspielen über die Einführung des Radiosprechers sogar radikalisiert. Durch Übertreibung parodiert Elfriede Jelinek die gewählten Genres und damit auch die über sie vermittelte Ideologie.

This thesis paper is based on the hypothesis that Jelinek�s radio plays � written between 1972 and 1992 � can be considered as literary attempts to unmask the everyday myths that are defined by Roland Barthes in his essay volume Mythologies. Translation of the abstract (English)

This thesis paper is based on the hypothesis that Jelinek�s radio plays � written between 1972 and 1992 � can be considered as literary attempts to unmask the everyday myths that are defined by Roland Barthes in his essay volume Mythologies. In the radio plays the manifestations of the myth � the belief in advancement and progress, humanism, individualism and the notion of civil art as well as the idea of the genius � are parts of a mythical value system that is perceived as a system of facts. Love, the human body, sexuality, femininity and nature appear in the texts as notions that have developed in the course of cultural history and, thus, have constantly been adjusted to the respective social requirements.
In her radio plays the author�s criticism of the myths is manifested by means of liguistic criticism. As a matter of fact, Jelinek extensively employs precast speech to manipulate speech that she senses to be manipulative in itself . Her �aesthetics of terror� and the reduction of the characters into prototypes is inspired by the visual media. Especially the autonomous radio projects � i.e. those not based on one of Jelinek�s works � are allude to trivial genres such as pre-primetime series and the �Heimatroman�. Jelinek adopts their characteristic language, character constellation, topics and conflicts as well as their lack of plot and logical structure. Furthermore, the authoritarian style also employs, imitates and exaggerates the language of the media and is even radicalized in the plays by means of the introduction of an announcer. In this way Elfriede Jelinek parodies the selected genres and at the same time the ideology they communicate.
