Basophils are important contributors to humoral memory responses.
They can bind intakt antigen in low concentrations in viro an in vivo on surface IgE by the high affinity IgE receptors. Binding of antigen activates basophils to produce IL-4 and IL-6. In Wildtyp mice basophils are main source of these TH2 cyokines in spleen and bone marrow after restimulation. Basophils induce therebz proliferation, antibody production and plasmacell differentiation in B cells.
The absence of basophils by depletion results in a reduced antibody production for antigen-specific IgG1 and IgG2a and a greater susceptibility to Streptococcus pneumoniae induced sepsis. Restimulation of immunized mice induces migration of basophils from blood to lymphnodes and site of inflammation.
