In dieser Dissertation wird das Leben und Werk von Franz Ludwig Schede (1882-1976) näher beleuchtet. Die Arbeit ist in drei Abschnitte unterteilt. Der erste Teil behandelt die Geschichte der Orthopädie. Im zweiten und dritten Teil wird das Leben und Werk von Franz Schede dargestellt. Franz Schede war ein renommierter deutscher Orthopäde. Er wurde am 9. Juli 1882 in Magdeburg geboren. Sein Vater war der Arzt Dr. Paul Schede. Franz Schedes Onkel war der berühmte Chirurg Max Schede (1844 - 1902). Franz Schede studierte Medizin in Heidelberg, Berlin, München und Kiel. 1905 beendete er erfolgreich sein Medizinstudium. Danach begann er als Volontärassistent in der Pathologie unter Oberndorffer in München. 1906 promovierte er zum Doktor der Medizin mit der Arbeit "Über ein Miliartuberkel am Herzen". Er wechselte 1907 in die Anatomie zu Mollier und Rückert. 1908 arbeitete Schede als chirurgischer Assistent unter Stubenrauch in München. 1909 wechselte er in die Chirurgie zu Narath nach Heidelberg. 1910 kam Schede zurück nach München und begann als Voluntärassistent in der orthopädischen Universitätsklinik unter Fritz Lange. 1912 wurde er Oberarzt an Langes Klinik. 1919 habilitierte sich Schede mit der Arbeit "Theoretische und praktische Grundlagen für den Bau von Kunstbeinen". 1923 wurde er zum außerordentlichen Professor an die orthopädische Universitätsklinik Leipzig berufen. 1929 wurde das Extraordinariat zu einem planmäßiges Ordinariat umgewandelt. 1933 war Franz Schede der Leiter der "Deutschen Orthopädischen Gesellschaft" in Leipzig. 1947 wechselte er nach Bad Pyrmont. Im Auftrag des Oldenburgischen Landesfürsorgeverbandes leitete Franz Schede 1948 den Aufbau einer orthopädischen Klinik in Sanderbusch. Bis 1954 arbeitete er dort als Chefarzt. Im Jahr 1958 wurde er an der Universität Göttingen emeritiert. Franz Schede starb am 11. Februar 1976 in Murnau. Er war zweimal verheiratet und hatte vier Kinder (drei leibliche). Franz Schede trug Wesentliches in vielen Bereichen der Orthopädie bei. Er forschte im Bereich der Wirbelsäulenverkrümmungen (Skoliose), der Fußsenkungsbeschwerden, des Haltungsverfalls und der angeborenen Hüftgelenksverrenkung. Der Nachweis, dass Skoliose in den ersten beiden Lebensjahren heilbar ist, geht auf ihn zurück. Auch im Bereich der angeborenen Hüftdysplasie und Hüftluxation forderte Schede die Früherkennung und Frühbehandlung. Sehr bekannt sind vor allem die Schede Schienen zur Mobilisation kontrakter Gelenke. Das Schede Laufrad zur funktionellen Nachbehandlung der angeborenen Hüftluxation ist ein anderes praktisches Beispiel seiner Forschungsarbeit. Daneben setzte er sich in besonderem Maße für die Krüppelfürsorge (Körperbehindertenfürsorge), Schulgesundheitspflege und Krankengymnastik ein. Er war ein ausgezeichneter Operateur, der nahezu jede orthopädische Operation durchführen konnte. Eine der größten Errungenschaften Schedes war der Neubau der orthopädischen Universitätsklinik Leipzig.

Translation of the abstract (English)

This dissertation treats the life and work of Franz Ludwig Schede (1882-1976). The doctoral thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is about the history of orthopaedics. The second and third part illuminates the life and work of Franz Schede. Franz Schede was a renowned German orthopaedist. He was born the 9th of July 1882 in Magdeburg. His Father was Dr. Paul Schede, MD. The uncle of Franz Schede was the famous surgeon Max Schede (1844-1902). Franz Schede studied medicine at the Universities of Heidelberg, Berlin, Munich and Kiel. He earned his medical doctorate in 1905. Afterwards he began his residency in pathology in Munich under the supervision of Oberndorffer. He completed his doctoral dissertation in 1906: "Über ein Miliartuberkel am Herzen" (about myocardial tuberculosis). In 1907 he worked in the Department of Anatomy of Mollier and Rückert. Franz Schede started his surgical career in 1908 under the supervision of Stubenrauch in Munich. In 1909 he changed to the Department of Surgery to Heidelberg under Narath's leadership. He came back to Munich in 1910 and started his residency under Professor Fritz Lange in the Department of Orhopaedic Surgery in the Medical School at the University of Munich. Franz Schede became an attending physician at Lange's hospital in 1912. In 1919 he gained his habilitation with his habilitation treatise "Theoretische und praktische Grundlagen für den Bau von Kunstbeinen" (theoretical and practical foundations of the construction of artifical legs). He then transferred in 1923 to the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Leipzig, where he served as an associate professor. In 1929 he became full professor. In 1933 Franz Schede was chairman of the German Society for Orthopedics. He moved to Bad Pyrmont in 1947. On behalf of the "Landesfürsorgeverband" (association of welfare) of Oldenburg Schede managed in Sanderbusch the setting up of an orthopaedic hospital in 1948. He was medical superintendent in the Orthopaedic Hospital of Sanderbusch till 1954. In 1958 he was relieved as an emeritus by the University of Göttingen. Franz Schede died on February 11, 1976 in Murnau. He was married twice and had four children (three biological ones). Franz Schede contributed many bits and pieces in almost every area of orthopaedics. He was doing research on distortion of the spine (scoliosis), foot complaints, collapse of body posture and congenital hip disorders. The curability of scoliosis in the first two years of life was demonstrated by him. Also the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of hip dysplasia and hip luxation was due to his research efforts. Well known are the splints of Schede to treat joint stiffening (ankylosis). The Schede Wheel is another practical example of his studies. It is for the functional aftercare of congenital hip luxation. Besides, Schede worked in the field of care for cripples (rehabilitation of the physically handicapped), school health care and physiotherapy. He was an excellent surgeon who could perform nearly every orthopaedic operation. The new building of the Orthopaedic University Hospital in Leipzig was one of Schede's greatest accomplishments.
